BRIGHT ANGEL RETREAT – UNION PIER, MICHIGAN

 

Environment

Union Pier is a quaint harbor town with three state parks in the region, all with huge sand dunes, some that rise as high as 250 feet. Bright Angel Retreat and Creative Center is located on 5 acres of land only 1.3 miles from Lake Michigan. This large house is well equipped for a unique writing opportunity. The first floor of the house is one bedroom, kitchen, living room/dining room and huge center table for laying out your thoughts. There is an additional log cabin room with another table, sofa and yoga mat, etc. for spreading out. The center houses artistic retreats focused on performing artists in theatre, music, dance, and performance to create work, successful collaborations and do strategic planning for non-profit organizations. Bright Angel Retreat is partnering with SPACE to welcome an artist to their beautiful facility. 

 

SPACE Michigan

The 4-bedroom house, includes a large open room with a modern kitchen and bathroom. There is a living room/dining room, additional work room and screened porch. For SPACE purposes only the first floor bedroom will be available so one or two persons would be eligible for a stay. For larger groups, you can contact Bright Angel Retreat and Creative Center directly.

Where you Are

Union Pier is in the Southwest corner of Michigan about 5 miles North of New Buffalo and only an hour and a half outside of Chicago IL. Union Pier is a perfect quick get-away from the city. There are plenty of places to walk or hike besides the five acres of Bright Angel. Glassman Park, Merritt and Younger Family Preserves and the Edward and Elizabeth Leonard Wildlife Preserve. Warren Dunes, a magnificent State Park is only 12 minutes away by car. Grocery, coffee shops, restaurants and hardware stores are just a short drive away in Union Pier and New Buffalo. On the property you will often see deer, wild turkeys, assorted birds and fowl.

 Your Host

Susan Padveen, Bright Angel Retreat owner, is a Chicago director and associate professor of theatre at Columbia College Chicago. She has spent many happy summers in Harbor Country, where she has also presented productions of The Shape of Things, Iphigeniology and The Portrait, an Afternoon with Gustav Klimt at the Judith Racht Gallery in Harbert, MI. Bright Angel Retreat is a culmination of many years of hosting creatives and other guests in Michigan at her private cottage in Union Pier. She now lives twenty minutes away in Baroda, MI.
